Firefox OS: Will Hard Drives & Software become Obsolete?

Category: Technology, Web Development

Came across this interested post, which states, “Firefox OS: Why My Hard Drive & Software are Obsolete“.

Basically, the idea is that everything will eventually move online and we’ll no longer need a local hard drive with locally installed copies of your favourite software. And I do agree with the general thought that, yes, everything that can, will move online. But it’s a bit far reaching to think that the general public has any idea of this movement. At this point, Firefox is still the minority (although a popular one) and basing your entire technology life around the Firefox browser is a very techie thing to do.

But anyway, I have been recently checking out one of the things mentioned in this list, Google docs. Have to say, it’s very impressive. Believe that Microsoft must be quite nervous looking at this free online software. It emulates Excel perfectly (for basic, standard features). And it benefits from all that on-line software has to offer. Namely, collaboration between people across the world. Given this could become a part of daily office life.

On line. This is something that is generally promoted by people living with decent networks. In the third world, where BT works or I should say doesn’t work (e.g. the UK), networking isn’t ubiquitous.

Provided the network is good, on-line is great. But online absolutely doesn’t exist everywhere and isn’t reliable. Just think about mobile use. What about when the ADSL is dialling for the umpteenth time in a day.

The OS, unfortunately, still has some legs.

@Glenn

Think you’re absolutely correct. Afraid it’s just one of those articles that makes a great story, but is really jumping the gun when signaling the end of the desktop OS.

Cool stuff to consider for future web sites though.
