Microsoft’s Silverlight is XP and Vista Only

Category: Web Development

Microsoft recently announced a new piece of software called Silverlight. From what I’ve read so far, this is their version of Flash. Microsoft describes Silverlight as…

Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering the next generation of Microsoft .NET–based media experiences and rich interactive applications for the Web.

So I tried to install the beta version on my PC. Unfortunately, I immediately received the following error:

Silverlight 1

Ok, install failed. I know, I’ll click on the “get more information” link. I’m taken to Microsoft’s web site, where this error message appears…

Silverlight 2

Of course, Error 1603. I should have know! Nope, just being overly sarcastic, of course that number means nothing to me.

So I click on the “installation requirements” link. Then it all becomes clear. You need at least Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista to run this new software.

Granted the PC I was using at the time is a bit out of date running Windows 2000, but just seemed a bit ironic to me that Silverlight has OS limitations when Microsoft are promoting it as a universal tool.
