Why Do You Visit Cherry Street?

Category: Cherry Street

In the past couple of weeks, I’ve been thinking about redesigning Cherry Street. And, more importantly, thinking about why this site exists in the first place.

Here’s my dilemma; I don’t have the time to consistently update this site with long articles. I have a full time job working as a Web Designer. Then I go home to my family. That leaves very little time in the day to actually write about Web Design.

Of course, I could push my limits by working away on the PC late at night and on the weekends. But, don’t think more time in front of the PC is the answer. Think most techies burn themselves out this way and in the long term, their work suffers.

So, if I was going to redesign Cherry Street, it would need to follow 3 basic rules:

1) The length and number of articles would have to be manageable

2) The articles should be fun to write

3) The articles are interesting and useful enough to attract regular visitors

My Interests

The main reason I created Cherry Street was a place to talk about my profession, Web Design. It would be quite hard to call my self a professional Web Designer and NOT have my own site.

As I said before, the problem lies in the fact that I spend my entire working day designing and talking about web sites. It’s a bit difficult to then come home and do the same thing on my personal site. Honestly, just don’t have the energy or time to write a long article each night.

That said, there are other interests I would like to share on a daily basis like Gaming or Technology News. Although, these types of posts would only contain a brief explanation and a simple link to the news story. Not sure if visitors find that useful?

What I DON’T Want to Write About

I don’t want to put my personal life on the Internet. I know that’s the main point behind most blogs, but it’s not for me. After all, it is the Internet. Who knows what’s lurking out there. You could be a complete nut case reading this right now : )

Seriously though, stories and photos of my family and personal life are not going to appear on this site.

Reasons to Keep Cherry Street Alive

> Keep in touch with web design community

I visit the sites of other Designers on a regular basis and I really do admire their blogs. For example, Matt Brett or Glenn Wolsey.

> Great for learning

I learned so much about blogging software and search engine optimization just from creating this site. It has provided invaluable hands-on knowledge.

> Once again, can’t be a Web Designer and not have my own site!

> It’s Fun!

It was fun in the beginning. Really enjoyed designing Cherry Street and setting it up. Now I’m looking for ways to keep it fun.

Please Reply with Your Thoughts

If I do have any visitors out there, please let me know your thoughts. Even a quick, one sentence comment would be great.

Just tell me, “Why do you visit Cherry Street?”

Or, even better, let me know if you have any ideas for improvements.

“What would you like to see in a redesigned version of Cherry Street?”

Thanks,
Dennis

I wouldn’t really worry about the frequency of posting, unless you dip down around once a month. But then again, some times you simply won’t be into writing due to real world/personal issues, and that’s fine. Last month I only posted twice and my traffic didn’t budge and my readers are still commenting frequently on recent posts.

I subscribed to your feed after following your link on a comment you left on my blog, then noticed lots of topics of interest that I write about myself. I enjoy your gaming and tech related posts most.

The only thing I’d like to see from a redesign is further getting away from some of the default WordPress theme elements. It looks like you built your design on top of Kubrick, which is fine. But I was tired of that theme years ago, so it makes your design feel a bit stale. Break away from that a bit more and you’ll be golden.

Thanks Matt - that’s exactly the type of feedback I was looking for. Interesting to hear that your readership didn’t drop during low activity.

Re: my current design - yep, it was built over the Kubrick theme. Definitely excited to try again with a fresh design now that I have more experience with Wordpress.

I’ve already started to put together some wireframes.

The “design phase” is always the most fun, huh? : )
