My New DS Lite Makes Games Fun Again

Category: Gaming

I finally gave in and bought a Nintendo DS Lite yesterday, which came bundled with the game “More Brain Training”. And you know what? It’s great fun!

Nintendo Know Games

That’s what Nintendo does so well at the moment. Reminds people that games are meant to be intuitive and fun. Something like Brain Training is in stark contrast to a game I’ve been playing recently on the Xbox 360; The Darkness. Don’t get me wrong though, I’m a card carrying Xbox Fanboy and I really do like The Darkness. Think it’s one of the best 360 games to date actually.

But, The Darkness is not exactly light hearted and the controls can be clunky. I know these two games are targeted towards two completely different demographics. Guess I’m just trying to say it’s nice to play on the lighter side of gaming for once.

Look, No Memory Cards!

As for the DS itself, I’m definitely impressed with the way it all works. Had a moment on the way home from the store where I was thinking, “Oh crap, do I need a memory card to save my games?!” But, no. Turns out each game cartridge includes some built-in memory. Nice.

After one night with the DS, decided to put PSP up for sale on Ebay. I never use the thing anyway. Main reason being the distinct lack of decent games. Titles such as GTA were impressive, but do I really want to play a big sandbox type game designed for consoles while I’m riding the bus to work? And as far as its video capabilities go, well Sony really dropped the ball on that one. Such a fantastic little screen and they ruin the whole thing with silly UMD movie disks and poor file compatibility. I mean, could they make it any harder to watch a freaking video? No. No, I don’t think they could.

Fun is Not Just for Kids

I had more fun playing Brain Training on the DS Lite in 1 hour than I ever did with the PSP. I don’t have a Nintendo Wii, but I imagine it’s like the DS where you learn that the whole family can join in with your gaming obsession. My wife is not into games normally, and we were laughing away while playing the DS last night. By the way, my Brain Age is 80 (ouch) and Lee’s is 30 (cheater).

If you were thinking about it, just go out and buy a DS. You won’t regret it. Not to sound really cheesy, but when is the last time you smiled while playing a game?
